  • Laws with Dangerous Dogs

First of all, does anyone know of any laws in Ohio having to do with dangerous dog breeds such as Pitbulls?

About 20 minutes ago, at 10 PM, I took my dog, Brody, out for the last time tonight. He did his thing and then I started walking down the side walk to get my sister because 10 PM is curfew. There is this pitbull that does not belong to anyone living on the property. It belongs to someone that always visits one of the tenants. He always has the stupid dog here.

Anyways, it is dark out, but I can see that the dog is on a leash and I thought I saw that someone was holding on to the other end of the leash. I am walking along a sidewalk about ten feet from the pitbull, with my dog, to go get my sister. This dog leaps out running at Brody, my dog, and tries to attack him. I have to yell NO at this pitbull while trying to pull my dog back FOUR times before anyone tries to come get the pitbull.

I run back inside my apartment and tell my mom what happened. She gets up and goes to ask them what happen They tell her that Brody tried to attack their dog! Brody was on a leash that gave him 3ft, at most, room to walk and their dog was about 10 feet away!! What the fuck? She gives them a slap on the hand by saying to keep their dog on a leash at all times. Shes tells me what they say and I, not trying to be quite at all, tell her that they are fucking lying. I ask her if she is letting them get away with their dog nearly attacking our, and she tells me that there is nothing she can do because she didn't see it.

You know fucking what, there is a huge difference between what she CAN do and what she NEEDS to do. Right now, she needed to fucking do what she needed to fucking do. At some point, she needs to take the fucking manager pants off and put her mother pants on. Not only Brody could have been seriously injured, or even killed, but I also could have been injured by that dog. She needed to do something. In stead, she yelled at me for having Brody outside when I was trying to get my sister, which by the way, she told me to do both things!

I am so fucking angry I could shoot whoever owns that pitbull! And the fucking thing is, not only did it try to attack my small dog (standard Pomeranian), but hey have it out, not holding it's leash, around a small baby that is not even two years old! I would be willing to bet it wasn't even one!

Pit bulls as a breed are actually very friendly, and even quite child-friendly. They're just very misunderstood, because people tend to raise them to be vicious - as guard dogs, or for dog-fighting. This is more about leash laws and owner responsibility and liability. Sorry to hear about that, by the way. Scary dogs are scary.

@audiblysilenced - I realize that pitbulls are not necessarily born mean, but there is a thing called bloodline. Dogs, as well as any animal, change over time. Genes and traits are passed down through generations. Pitbulls are the main, or at least one of them, fighting breed and too many of them are raised from puppies to be mean and attack. The fact that a sixty pound dog would go after a 24 pound one doesn't help the case.

The baby walking around with no adult watching it weighs less than my dog! And they are letting him to continue walking around even after the dog tried to attack something.

So weird that you wrote this. I was looking at dangerous dog laws yesterday. I wrote about the misconception of large dogs today. Dogs usually become vicious because of their owners, not because their breed is mean. They might be more prone to becoming vicious because of their genes, but it is really up to the master. Most places, there isn't too much you can do if no one was attacked. The owner would still be responsible, but there is usually a hearing and the dog has to be proven dangerous which means biting at least one person and yadida. I'm sorry that this happened to you.
